Muller Forge had its beginning back in 1984 when Jody, then 12 years old, decided to try his hand
at making a knife. He so much enjoyed the work, that he made several and enlisted help from his
dad, Pat. They made a few knives and gave them away or traded them for materials, and really enjoyed
their new hobby. Then folks started asking to buy their knives or to make one for them and this
started the ball rolling. After making many stock removal knives, in 1994 they built a forge
and started making their own Damascus steel. At that time, Jody Muller Knifeworks became Muller Forge.
Today, Jody and Pat collaborate to make knives, letter openers, cleavers, bottle openers, swords, etc.
and will attempt almost anything made of steel. Each piece is a combination effort with both craftsmen
adding their special touch. Both work at the forge making Damascus from 1095, L6 & other high carbon
steels. They especially like making the mosaic patterns. Jody does most of the design and finish work,
with Pat grinding blades, making handles and guards and making sheaths. Jody has training in hand
engraving and many of their pieces show that skill, as well as carving and file work. He recently
created a bracelet with engraving for the Missouri Jewelers Assn. which won the Best of Show award and
will represent Missouri in the National competition. |
